However, a large number, even if they have the motivation, lack the knowledge about how best to approach study. Success in study and exams requires ability, motivation, hard work and \u2018know how\u2019. Many students with great ability, unfortunately do not achieve exam results which reflect their true potential. This is because they do not match their ability with the required level of motivation and effort. Even great ability will not compensate for the absence of motivation, method and hard work. Often students of average ability perform better because they make better use of the talents they possess. Moderate ability methodically employed is more productive than greater ability employed in an unmethodical way.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11.5pt;\">Wouldn\u2019t it be really satisfying if you could achieve assessment and exam results that reflect your true potential?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Remember, and be forewarned, that becoming a good student is a long-term process of changing habits of working and ways of thinking about what you are trying to achieve. It is much preferable if you want to do well in your studies for your own sake. This is the crucial difference between intrinsic (internal) and extrinsic (external) motivation.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Start by accepting that school and education is necessary and, if used correctly, makes learning much easier. Remember that learning is your responsibility so try to take control of your own learning &#8211; do not rely on your parents or teachers to control it for you. Work on adopting a positive mental attitude \u2013 a \u2018growth mindset\u2019, as opposed to a \u2018fixed mindset\u2019.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Accepting that study is not easy, you can motivate yourself by thinking about what it can help you achieve &#8211; good results, the points, self-satisfaction, entry to your chosen career, etc. The sheer volume of work in the various subjects can be off-putting and have a negative motivating effect. But a good method of self-motivation is to set yourself challenging yet attainable short-term goals. These relate to daily, weekly and subject goals which will be dealt with later. If you take care of realistic short-term goals the long-term goals will take care of themselves. In this way you can make school and learning a success and achieve your full potential.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Central to this process is the idea of \u2018delayed gratification\u2019. So make the most of school by approaching each class with an attitude of positive self-discipline. See your teachers as a valuable resource which you can use. Perhaps parents&nbsp;or class teachers may be able to help younger students in completing this very&nbsp;important task.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Remember to make&nbsp;plenty of photocopies of the chart before you use it so that you will have&nbsp;spare ones to fill in if your timetable changes. Just complete your written homework. Now you have sorted the \u2018known\u2019 from the \u2018don\u2019t know yet\u2019.<\/li><\/ol><ol start=\"3\"><li><strong>Learn<\/strong> &#8211; Now learn the \u2018don\u2019t know yet\u2019 material. Remember, the more you do in class the less you have to do at home. If your preview brainstorm is not good you will have to look at your classroom performance and do better.<\/li><li><strong>Review<\/strong> &#8211; Now complete a review by trying to recall all the information. Notes should be brief yet complete reminders of the essential information in a chapter.<\/p><p>Follow the \u2018<strong>MESSED\u2019 method<\/strong> when making notes:<\/p><ul><li><strong>M:<\/strong> USE TWO <strong>MARGINS-<\/strong> Draw a narrow margin (1cm) on the left-hand side and use this for numbering headings. Draw a wide margin (6cm) on the right and use this later for making any additions you feel necessary.<\/li><li><strong>E:<\/strong> <strong>EASY<\/strong> TO READ- Since your notes will be used to revise swiftly and often it is important that they are user friendly. Care now will save you a lot of time later.<\/li><li><strong>S:<\/strong> <strong>SHORT-<\/strong> Use words or their abbreviations, symbols and diagrams (spider grams, web diagrams, mind maps, graphic organisers). Sentences should only be used for important definitions, quotes, or equations.<\/li><li><strong>S: SPACED<\/strong>&#8211; Do not cram your notes &#8211; they are hard to learn from later. You can also add more information in the open spaces at a later stage.<\/li><li><strong>E: EMPHASISE<\/strong> AND <strong>ENHANCE<\/strong>&#8211; Number and highlight each heading. Then list and itemize the details. Highlight important items during the revision stage.<\/li><li><strong>D: DOWN<\/strong> AND <strong>DESIGN<\/strong>&#8211; Work down the page. Follow the six reading steps above then read the chapter from beginning to end. As you do, think hard at the end of each sentence. Only highlight the key words except where there is a sentence which contains definitions or quotations.<\/p><p><strong>Other active methods<\/strong> of studying and note-taking, which are not dealt with in any detail here, are the use of <strong>mind maps, graphic organisers and flash cards. <\/strong>Recent research suggests that these are superior methods, compared to highlighting and linear notetaking. You should <strong>explore these<\/strong> and settle on the <strong>system that suits you best.<\/strong><\/p><p>The advantages of using any of these methods are that your <strong>concentration is improved<\/strong> because you are forced to be more <strong>actively involved in thinking about the material. <\/strong>You are not being<strong> passive.<\/strong> You are <strong>processing<\/strong> the information and, in a sense, making it your own. Your learning is <strong>deeper<\/strong> and thus greatly enhanced.<\/p><p><strong>Frequent revision<\/strong> is necessary if you are to retain mastery of each chapter. Your notes, highlighting, or whatever method you have chosen, will allow you to <strong>revise quickly<\/strong> avoiding the time-consuming task of having to go through the full chapter. If you develop these skills and use them consistently, you will be able to bring a huge body of information in the various subjects under your control.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">C.\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Improving your memory and recall<\/strong><\/p><p>Just because you have learnt something once does not mean that you will always know it. There is a very strong tendency to <strong>forget information that is not in current use<\/strong>. Therefore, what has been learnt must be used constantly or it will be lost and have to be re-learnt. Examinations are all about effective recall. Any techniques which improve your recall will enhance your performance in examinations. Your individual subject\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">teachers will be able to give you more advice on this matter. Many of your subjects have <\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">essay\u00a0<\/b><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">type questions<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"> in the exam which usually carry a <\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">high percentage of the\u00a0<\/b><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">overall marks.<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"> Regular <\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">practice<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"> at writing essays as part of your\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">written homework will help you perfect this important skill. The following\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">guidelines are relevant to all year groups but are particularly directed at\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Leaving Certificate students.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(i) <b>Think\u00a0<\/b>carefully about the <b>title<\/b> &#8211; it is a vital part of producing a good\u00a0essay. Look carefully at each <b>word or phrase<\/b> in turn. Otherwise you can<br \/>easily waste a lot of time writing about irrelevant things for which you will\u00a0get little marks.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(ii) <b>Gather\u00a0<\/b>together all the <b>material<\/b> for your essay.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(iii) <b>Brainstorm\u00a0<\/b>&#8211; using a rough work piece of paper, jot down any words, phrases, or ideas that\u00a0you can think of, which relate to the question or essay title. Now number the\u00a0words or phrases in the order in which you will write about them in your essay.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(iv) <b>Plan\u00a0<\/b>&#8211; this is of crucial importance. Using the results of your brainstorm, neatly\u00a0write out the plan of your essay in your copy\/answerbook. Decide on the <b>number\u00a0 of paragraphs <\/b>(5 including introduction and conclusion is the usual) and\u00a0what <b>points<\/b> will go into each paragraph. If you tend to write <b>too\u00a0much<\/b>, it is at this stage that you need to make tough decisions. You must\u00a0limit your essay plan to what can be managed in the space (and time) you have.\u00a0If you tend to write <b>too little,<\/b> think about giving more attention to\u00a0how much explaining you must do to get your points across. Include a brief <b>introduction\u00a0<\/b>and <b>conclusion<\/b> in your plan.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(v) <b>Essay\u00a0<\/b>\u2013 now start the actual essay. In the <b>introduction<\/b>, briefly, explain what\u00a0the essay will be about, and the main points you will make.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(vi) <b>Paragraphs\u00a0<\/b>\u2013 now take each paragraph in turn and, using the words or headings from your\u00a0plan, construct your sentences to create your content. Paragraphs are <b>clusters\u00a0of sentences<\/b> with one <b>main theme<\/b>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(vii) <b>Sentences\u00a0&#8211;<\/b> these can vary a great deal in length. If you need a punchy opening or\u00a0conclusion, use a <b>short<\/b> sentence. A lot of items of information also\u00a0suit short sentences. You will tend to need <b>longer<\/b> sentences when you\u00a0are explaining and developing a point or argument.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(viii) <b>Flow <\/b>&#8211;\u00a0make your essay flow by using <b>link words<\/b> like, \u2018but\u2019, \u2018then\u2019, \u2018so\u2019, \u2018however\u2019,\u00a0\u2018nevertheless\u2019, etc.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(ix) <b>Signposting\u00a0 &#8211;<\/b> now and again, try to make <b>connections<\/b> between your paragraphs and\u00a0the title and between each paragraph. Work to the question in the title at all\u00a0times and <b>show the reader where you are going.<\/b><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(x<b>) Examples &#8211;\u00a0<\/b>use plenty of examples to <b>illustrate<\/b> your point. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(xi) <b>Conclusion\u00a0&#8211;<\/b> the conclusion should be a <b>short summary<\/b> of the main points you\u00a0have made and, where appropriate, your own personal comment on the topic under\u00a0discussion.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Don\u2019t be too hard\u00a0on yourself. \u00a0Remember that most of what\u00a0you read is written by \u2018professionals\u2019. If you are a <b>beginner<\/b>, then<br \/>compare yourself to other beginners. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Bear in mind that\u00a0these are only general guidelines. A History essay is not the same as an\u00a0English essay. More <b>specific advice<\/b> will be given by your <b>subject\u00a0teachers<\/b>. Plenty of <b>practice<\/b> in writing essays as part of your\u00a0written homework will prepare you well for the day of the exam.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">F. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Doing effective\u00a0revision<\/b><\/p><p>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">If you examine the<\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\"> graph<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"> again in Section 6c-<\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\"> \u2018Improving your memory and recall\u2019, <\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">you\u00a0will be reminded of the fact that we all <\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">begin to forget<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"> what we have\u00a0learnt almost as soon as we have learnt it. It is only through <\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">regular\u00a0revision<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"> that we can commit information to our <\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">long-term memories<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">. Remember:\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Revision work\u00a0<\/b><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">is ongoing<\/b><\/p><p>If you think\u00a0carefully about what has been written so far, you will see that all of it\u00a0relates closely to the idea of doing effective revision.<\/p><p>The student who:<\/p><p>\u00a0(i) uses the <b>PCLR method<\/b> to revise each\u00a0day\u2019s class work,<\/p><p>(ii) follows the <b>\u2018MESSED\u2019\u00a0method<\/b> when making notes of chapters,<\/p><p>(iii) uses <b>tips\u00a0<\/b>like <b>linear notes, mind maps, graphic organisers and mnemonics<\/b> to aid <b>memory\u00a0recall<\/b>,<\/p><p>(iv) <b>revises\u00a0<\/b>the necessary material <b>before completing written homework<\/b>, and,<\/p><p>(v) follows the\u00a0advice about <b>essay writing<\/b>,\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">will automatically\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">be taking care of much of the work associated with revision.<\/span><\/p><p>If you take on\u00a0board the <b>time management advice<\/b> and follow your <b>\u2018one-week timetable\u2019<\/b>,\u00a0your short-term goals will be achieved, and the long-term goals will look after\u00a0themselves. This is particularly true if you stay in control of completed\u00a0chapters by fitting revision of these <b>\u2018old\u2019 chapters <\/b>(see below) into your\u00a0weekly home study timetable. Study sessions during Saturdays and Sundays could\u00a0be used particularly for this purpose. Try to accept that revision is not just\u00a0something that takes place a few weeks before the exams start, but that it is a\u00a0<b>continuous ongoing process<\/b> which applies to all students whether sitting\u00a0exams or not.<\/p><p><b>Revise \u2018old\u2019\u00a0chapters <\/b><\/p><p>When revising \u2018old\u2019\u00a0chapters you should make sure to read the <b>questions<\/b> at the end of the\u00a0chapter beforehand. Find the <b>answers<\/b> to these questions. If you are in\u00a0your exam year, you should also read the questions relating to the chapter on\u00a0the <b>past exam papers<\/b><a>.\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Bear in mind that exams don\u2019t just test your ability to remember information, they also test your ability to answer particular types of questions. For this reason, you must <strong>practice writing full <\/strong><\/span><b style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit;\">answers<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> to questions from past papers. In this way you can work on your depth of answering and timing so that you will not lose marks because of poor exam technique on exam day. <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Writing full\u00a0answers can take up a lot of time so you will only be able to do this for some\u00a0questions. <\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Planning answers<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> to past questions is much <\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">faster <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">and\u00a0almost as effective. Do this by using the <\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\u2018brainstorming method\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> which\u00a0will give you a list of ideas and points which you would make if you were\u00a0writing a full answer. Another useful way of revising for the Junior or Leaving\u00a0Certificate exams is to <\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">study revision books<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> which would allow you to\u00a0revise far more often and faster than if you were using the textbooks. Remember\u00a0also that your <\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">subject teachers<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> will do vital revision in the last term\u00a0before the Junior and Leaving Certificate exams. All of the above will help to\u00a0make your workload much more manageable.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Organising\u00a0your revision <\/b><\/p><p>If you are to\u00a0approach this revision work in an organised way you must have a plan. The \u2018<b>Eight-Week\u00a0Revision Planner\u2019<\/b> (2a and 2b in the appendices) should be used to plan your\u00a0work and <b>keep a record<\/b> of your progress. As you can see it covers a\u00a0period of eight weeks. You should start by making <b>copies <\/b>of the planner\u00a0so that it can be used again and again. (pdf 2a covers weeks 1-4 and pdf 2b\u00a0covers weeks 5-8. Stick them together to create a large <b>A3 size chart<\/b>). Now\u00a0<b>fill in your subjects<\/b> in addition to Irish, English, and Maths. Check a\u00a0calendar and fill in the relevant <b>dates<\/b> for each week. The next step is\u00a0to take <b>each subject<\/b> and, using the contents page of your textbook, fill\u00a0in the <b>number of the chapter<\/b> on the day you intend to revise it.\u00a0Alternatively fill in the <b>relevant topic<\/b> which would be more meaningful.\u00a0<b>Be realistic<\/b> &#8211; if you attempt too much there is a danger that you will\u00a0fall behind. Remember to <b>maintain balance<\/b> by paying sufficient attention\u00a0to all your subjects. Begin to do this planning work, allowing yourself enough\u00a0time before Week I is due to start. Your completed revision planner could be\u00a0pinned on the <b>wall<\/b> beside where you study, alongside your <b>\u2018one-week\u00a0timetable\u2019<\/b>. The small boxes under each subject heading can be used to <b>tick\u00a0off each chapter<\/b> as you complete it. If you stick to your plan you will be\u00a0able to see at a glance the progress you are making, and this will act as a <b>great morale booster!<\/b><\/p><p>\u00a0<b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 G. The language of exam questions<\/b><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p>As already\u00a0stated, exams don\u2019t just test your ability to remember information, they also\u00a0 test your ability to answer particular types of questions. For this reason, you\u00a0must <b>practice writing full answers<\/b> to questions from past papers. In\u00a0this way you can work on your <b>depth of answering<\/b> and <b>timing<\/b> so\u00a0that you will not lose marks because of poor <b>exam technique<\/b> on exam day.\u00a0Good exam technique is crucial to performing well. The first, and most\u00a0critical, step is to <b>read the question carefully<\/b> and accurately <b>interpret\u00a0<\/b>its meaning. Sometimes this is not always straightforward. <b>Misinterpreting\u00a0questions<\/b> is one of the biggest errors students make in exams.\u00a0Unfortunately, answering a question you weren\u2019t asked will gain you little or\u00a0no marks.<\/p><p>So, how do you go\u00a0about <b>reading the question?<\/b><\/p><p>All exam\u00a0questions contain <b>two types of words<\/b> \u2013 \u2018topic or theme\u2019 words and\u00a0\u2018command or instruction\u2019 words.<\/p><p>Identifying the key\u00a0<b>\u2018topic\u2019<\/b> <b>words or phrases<\/b> in the question will help you to work\u00a0out <b>what the question is about. <\/b>You could <b>underline<\/b> these words\u00a0or phrases &#8211; and use a particular colour, eg. blue.<\/p><p>Identifying the <b>\u2018command\u2019\u00a0<\/b>words in the question helps you work out what you are being <b>instructed to do<\/b>.\u00a0What does the <b>examiner<\/b> want? You could <b>box<\/b> these words \u2013 and use\u00a0a particular, but different, colour, eg. red. Remember there could be more than\u00a0one command word in a question, eg. List and explain, Mark and label, etc.<\/p><p>The next step is\u00a0to be clear about what exactly each of the command words mean. Knowing the\u00a0difference between similar \u2018command\u2019 words is especially important.<\/p><p>Familiarise\u00a0yourself with the following <b>terms or command words<\/b> and their <b>meanings\/definitions\u00a0<\/b>commonly used in exam questions:<\/p><p><b>Analyse:<\/b> say why things happened (eg. in\u00a0history) and how they affected events that came later.<\/p><p><b>Amplify:<\/b> explain further, give extra details.<\/p><p><b>Assess:<\/b> give a judgement about something. If, on the other hand, you have <b>not used your time well\u00a0to date<\/b>, all is not lost. Don\u2019t beat yourself up! View your mistakes, if\u00a0that\u2019s what they were, as an opportunity for learning. <b>Put it down to\u00a0experience and decide to start now.<\/b> There is much you can do between now and the exam if you have the motivation. Do not give up hope. A <\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">little stress is necessary.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(ii) Aim to find\u00a0ways to <b>harness the energy<\/b> associated with exam stress and put it to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">good use.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(iii) Failing an\u00a0exam is <b>not the end of the world<\/b> so keep your anxieties in proper\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">proportion and maintain some perspective. <\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">Too<br \/>much stress is bad for us.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(iv) There is\u00a0lots of <b>goodwill<\/b> coming your way. Everyone wants you to achieve,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">especially the examiners.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(v) <b>No one\u00a0understands everything.<\/b> There are bound to be areas where you feel\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">under-prepared and confused. The exam hall &#8211; practical tips for the exam<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(i) When you get\u00a0your <b>paper,<\/b> <b>read it or scan it,<\/b> to get an idea of what it is\u00a0like.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Turn over every page.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(ii) Pay special\u00a0attention to the <b>instructions at the beginning of the paper<\/b> and for e<\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">ach\u00a0separate section<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"> and question.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(iii) <b>Decide\u00a0on the questions<\/b> you are going to answer. Don\u2019t jump at a question\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">because it looks easy, and don\u2019t ignore a question<br \/>because it looks difficult at\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">first glance. In general, you should\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">plan to do your best question first. Remember<br \/>your teachers\u2019 advice.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(vii) <b>Keep\u00a0rigidly to the recommended time<\/b> <b>for each question\/section.<\/b> If you\u00a0are\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">not\u00a0finished when the time is up, leave a blank space and go on to the next\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">question. Parents\/Guardians of Senior students<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">A.<\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"> General<\/span><\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Being a parent of\u00a0a second level student in today\u2019s world is not easy. <b>Pressures <\/b>emanating\u00a0from many different sources inevitably give rise to <b>stress<\/b> which in turn\u00a0can result in <b>conflict.<\/b> Success today demands much greater commitment\u00a0from the student than in the past. \u2018Qualification Inflation\u2019 has resulted in\u00a0the need for higher and higher educational attainment in order to secure a\u00a0preferred job choice or third level place. Parents need to see things as they\u00a0are today, not as they were in the past. Most students require the <b>positive\u00a0and active encouragement and support<\/b> of their parents &#8211; even though at\u00a0times it may not seem this way! Parents must try to juggle all the demands of\u00a0modem living, <b>keep the lines of communication open<\/b> (even during\u00a0difficult times), work at resolving conflict when it arises, and reach <b>agreed\u00a0compromise<\/b> when appropriate.<\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p><p><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">B. Organisation\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Perhaps the key\u00a0to success is good organization. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(i) Parents could\u00a0start by <b>reading through this study guide<\/b> in order to familiarise\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">themselves with the advice which it gives to students.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(ii) Where\u00a0possible, students should be provided with a suitable <b>quiet place to\u00a0<\/b><\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">study.<\/span><\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(iii) Try to\u00a0provide them with the necessary <b>time for home study.<\/b> Check their study\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">a<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">nd\u00a0leisure timetable and ensure that it is followed. <\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">Strike a suitable balance\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">between study time, household chores and\u00a0sporting, leisure and entertainment\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">activities.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(iv) Try to\u00a0establish <b>regular mealtimes<\/b> so that study and other activities can be s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">lotted in appropriately.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(v) Tackle the\u00a0thorny issue of <b>part-time jobs.<\/b> These are not recommended,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">particularly in Junior or Leaving\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Certificate years. Students with part- time jobs\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">have three major commitments: study, leisure\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">and the job. They too often give in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">the temptation of reducing their study time to maintain their other two\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">commitments. Students should continue with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">a part-time job only if the quantity\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">quality of study is not interfered with or if students are prepared to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">sacrifice\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">some\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">of their leisure time to keep the job. Which is preferable &#8211; short term\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">financial gain or <\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">long-term educational\u00a0<\/b><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">achievement<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">? It is a question of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">priorities.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong>C. Parents of Junior Cycle students\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Parents of Junior\u00a0students, particularly First years, have a major responsibility in the\u00a0establishment of <b>good study habits at an early stage.<\/b> While it is\u00a0important to encourage a developing sense of personal responsibility and\u00a0self-motivation on the one hand, close direction and monitoring is necessary on\u00a0the other. Maturity does not necessarily come with age. If you are unhappy with\u00a0the level of progress, direct intervention is vital. Don\u2019t be slow to act.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">(i) Help your son\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">or daughter to make out a <\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">workable home study and leisure\u00a0<\/b><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">timetable.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> Insist that it is followed. Some compromise may be\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">necessary.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(ii) Ensure that she\/he\u00a0uses the <b>homework journal<\/b> correctly. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(iii) <b>Check\u00a0<\/b>that <b>written<\/b> work, <b>learning<\/b> work and regular <b>revision<\/b> is\u00a0completed to a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">high standard.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(iv) Ensure that\u00a0the <b>journal is signed<\/b> every weekend. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(v) <b>Sign any\u00a0notes<\/b> written by the class teacher or subject teachers. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(vi) Use the <b>journal\u00a0<\/b>to keep in regular <b>communication with the school.<\/b> <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">(vii) Ensure the <b>Code\u00a0of Behaviour<\/b> is observed in all respects. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">In general, m<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">aintain a <\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit;\">watching (if unobtrusive) brief<\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"> on your child\u2019s educational\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">progress throughout the first three years at second level.<\/span><\/p><p><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">D. Parent\/Guardians of Senior students\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Ideally, at this\u00a0stage, teens and young adults will have developed an appropriate level of <b>self-motivation\u00a0and self-discipline.<\/b> Learning should be <b>self-directed.<\/b> This is\u00a0indeed the case with many students. However, we don\u2019t live in an ideal world.\u00a0Some students at this age insist on their <b>rights<\/b> to be treated as young\u00a0adults by their parents and teachers, but unfortunately, do not adhere to the <b>responsibilities\u00a0or duties<\/b> attached to these rights. Encourage them, in a <b>non-confrontational\u00a0<\/b>way, to see the link between rights and duties and to behave in a manner\u00a0appropriate to their expected level of maturity. If this is not forthcoming,\u00a0you have the right, (and the responsibility) as a parent to intervene. You may\u00a0feel it necessary to act on some of the advice given in relation to Junior Cycle\u00a0students. Try to <b>communicate openly and honestly.<\/b> Bear in mind the <b>pressures\u00a0of adolescence<\/b> and be sensitive to their needs. <b>Avoid alienation. You will never gain perfection but by striving towards it, you\nwill acquire <b>excellence.<\/b> Remember, the <b>skills of studying<\/b> are not\nsomething you can read about once and instantly understand and apply for all\ntime. You <b>learn them gradually through trial and error<\/b>, through repeated\npractice, and through stopping to think about your experience. Learning to\nstudy effectively is one of the most <b>challenging and satisfying undertakings<\/b>\nopen to us.
