Doing effective\u00a0revision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">If you examine the<b>\u00a0graph<\/b>\u00a0again in Section 6c-<b>\u00a0\u2018Improving your memory and recall\u2019,\u00a0<\/b>you\u00a0will be reminded of the fact that we all\u00a0<b>begin to forget<\/b> what we have learnt almost as soon as we have learnt it. It is only through <b>regular\u00a0revision<\/b>\u00a0that we can commit information to our\u00a0<b>long-term memories<\/b>. Remember:\u00a0<b>Revision work\u00a0<\/b><b>is ongoing<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">If you think\u00a0carefully about what has been written so far, you will see that all of it\u00a0relates closely to the idea of doing effective revision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">The student who:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0(i) uses the\u00a0<b>PCLR method<\/b>\u00a0to revise each\u00a0day\u2019s class work,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">(ii) follows the\u00a0<b>\u2018MESSED\u2019\u00a0method<\/b>\u00a0when making notes of chapters,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">(iii) uses\u00a0<b>tips\u00a0<\/b>like\u00a0<b>linear notes, mind maps, graphic organisers and mnemonics<\/b>\u00a0to aid\u00a0<b>memory\u00a0recall<\/b>,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">(iv)\u00a0<b>revises\u00a0<\/b>the necessary material\u00a0<b>before completing written homework<\/b>, and,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">(v) follows the\u00a0advice about\u00a0<b>essay writing<\/b>,\u00a0will automatically\u00a0be taking care of much of the work associated with revision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">If you take on\u00a0board the\u00a0<b>time management advice<\/b>\u00a0and follow your\u00a0<b>\u2018one-week timetable\u2019<\/b>,\u00a0your short-term goals will be achieved, and the long-term goals will look after\u00a0themselves. This is particularly true if you stay in control of completed\u00a0chapters by fitting revision of these\u00a0<b>\u2018old\u2019 chapters\u00a0<\/b>(see below) into your\u00a0weekly home study timetable. Study sessions during Saturdays and Sundays could\u00a0be used particularly for this purpose. Try to accept that revision is not just\u00a0something that takes place a few weeks before the exams start, but that it is a\u00a0<b>continuous ongoing process<\/b>\u00a0which applies to all students whether sitting\u00a0exams or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><b>Revise \u2018old\u2019\u00a0chapters<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">When revising \u2018old\u2019\u00a0chapters you should make sure to read the\u00a0<b>questions<\/b>\u00a0at the end of the\u00a0chapter beforehand. Find the\u00a0<b>answers<\/b>\u00a0to these questions. If you are in\u00a0your exam year, you should also read the questions relating to the chapter on\u00a0the\u00a0<b>past exam papers<\/b><a style=\"color: #000000;\">.\u00a0<\/a>Bear in mind that exams don\u2019t just test your ability to remember information, they also test your ability to answer particular types of questions. For this reason, you must\u00a0<strong>practice writing full\u00a0<\/strong><b>answers<\/b>\u00a0to questions from past papers. In this way you can work on your depth of answering and timing so that you will not lose marks because of poor exam technique on exam day.\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/a>Writing full\u00a0answers can take up a lot of time so you will only be able to do this for some\u00a0questions.\u00a0<b>Planning answers<\/b> to past questions is much\u00a0 f<b>aster\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0almost as effective. Do this by using the\u00a0<b>\u2018brainstorming method\u2019<\/b>\u00a0which\u00a0will give you a list of ideas and points which you would make if you were\u00a0writing a full answer. Another useful way of revising for the Junior or Leaving\u00a0Certificate exams is to\u00a0<b>study revision books<\/b>\u00a0which would allow you to\u00a0revise far more often and faster than if you were using the textbooks. Remember\u00a0also that your\u00a0<b>subject teachers<\/b>\u00a0will do vital revision in the last term\u00a0before the Junior and Leaving Certificate exams. All of the above will help to\u00a0make your workload much more manageable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><b>Organising\u00a0your revision<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">If you are to\u00a0approach this revision work in an organised way you must have a plan. The \u2018<b>Eight-Week\u00a0Revision Planner\u2019<\/b>\u00a0(2a and 2b in the appendices) should be used to plan your\u00a0work and\u00a0<b>keep a record<\/b>\u00a0of your progress. As you can see it covers a\u00a0period of eight weeks. You should start by making\u00a0<b>copies\u00a0<\/b>of the planner\u00a0so that it can be used again and again. (pdf 2a covers weeks 1-4 and pdf 2b\u00a0covers weeks 5-8. Stick them together to create a large\u00a0<b>A3 size chart<\/b>). Now\u00a0<b>fill in your subjects<\/b>\u00a0in addition to Irish, English, and Maths. Check a\u00a0calendar and fill in the relevant\u00a0<b>dates<\/b>\u00a0for each week. The next step is\u00a0to take\u00a0<b>each subject<\/b>\u00a0and, using the contents page of your textbook, fill\u00a0in the\u00a0<b>number of the chapter<\/b>\u00a0on the day you intend to revise it.\u00a0Alternatively fill in the\u00a0<b>relevant topic<\/b>\u00a0which would be more meaningful.\u00a0<b>Be realistic<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 if you attempt too much there is a danger that you will\u00a0fall behind. Remember to\u00a0<b>maintain balance<\/b>\u00a0by paying sufficient attention\u00a0to all your subjects. Begin to do this planning work, allowing yourself enough\u00a0time before Week I is due to start. Your completed revision planner could be\u00a0pinned on the\u00a0<b>wall<\/b>\u00a0beside where you study, alongside your\u00a0<b>\u2018one-week\u00a0timetable\u2019<\/b>. The small boxes under each subject heading can be used to\u00a0<b>tick\u00a0off each chapter<\/b>\u00a0as you complete it.
