Coping with stress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">Prepared or not,\u00a0most students experience stress on the run-up to exams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">Try to keep the\u00a0following points in mind:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">(i) The stress\u00a0created by exams is a\u00a0<b>positive force (good stress)<\/b>\u00a0which you can\u00a0use\u00a0to help you pull through. A\u00a0<b>little stress is necessary.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">(ii) Aim to find\u00a0ways to\u00a0<b>harness the energy<\/b>\u00a0associated with exam stress and put it to\u00a0good use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">(iii) Failing an\u00a0exam is\u00a0<b>not the end of the world<\/b>\u00a0so keep your anxieties in proper\u00a0proportion and maintain some perspective.\u00a0<b>Too much stress is bad for us.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">(iv) There is\u00a0lots of\u00a0<b>goodwill<\/b>\u00a0coming your way. Everyone wants you to achieve,\u00a0especially the examiners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">(v)\u00a0<b>No one\u00a0understands everything.<\/b>\u00a0There are bound to be areas where you feel\u00a0under-prepared and confused. This is\u00a0absolutely\u00a0<b>normal.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">(vi) When you\u00a0feel\u00a0<b>stress or anxiety<\/b>\u00a0the following\u00a0<b>breathing exercise<\/b>\u00a0can help\u00a0you\u00a0relax \u2013 even in the exam hall:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 * sit in a comfortable\u00a0position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 * make sure your body is at ease \u2013 two feet on the floor, hands in your lap, back straight, shoulders down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *Close your eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 * Allow yourself to notice the\u00a0sounds all around you, for a moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 * Notice your breathing. Do not change it in any way. Just observe it. Are you breathing quickly, slowly, deeply?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0* Breathe in slowly counting to 7, hold as you count to 10, exhale as you continue counting to 15. Deep \u2018belly breathing\u2019, not shallow chest breathing. Repeat 5 times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 * Open your eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0* Sit quietly for a moment or two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 * Repeat if necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">(vii) Focus on\u00a0controlling the things that are within your control and forget about the rest. \u2018<b>Control the controllables\u2019<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;\">(Viii) Stay\u00a0present and in the moment.
